Manty Arrested on Forgery Charge Released by Court
Peter Manty alias Gouras faced Judge Keegan on a forgery complaint by Ernest Saras. Manty was discharged after a 3.5 hour hearing. Saras was later arrested by Inspector Colgan for passing a $19.47 worthless check to City Treasurer Merrill. The trial covered checks drawn by The Texas Steamship Co. for Saras and Manty, with total questioned sums near $629.59. Manty testified he managed the Texas lunch room and that he and Saras planned to use weekly checks to pay bills. Saras denied endorsing or authorizing such actions. The case included bank and witness testimony, with prosecutors seeking grand jury action in October.
