At Wickford Rhode Island on August 16 nineteen hand engines competed amid shifting cross winds. The Hancock failed to win, finishing 11th, as Germania Fire King Nonantum and White Angel gained wind advantages. Francis B. Torrey, born August 23, 1828 in Hallowell, celebrated his 91st birthday at the Old Folks Home where he has lived since spring. A former Richmond shop owner and founder of Torrey Roller Bushing Works, he remains active in seeking an indestructible trolley wheel as he visits his prior work sites. Torrey, a Democrat, served as customs collector in 1865 until Harrison’s election.

Funeral of Mrs Williams at Grace Church
Funeral services for Mrs Lillian May Williams wife of Daniel Williams were held Tuesday afternoon at Grace church with Rev Culbert McGay officiating. Auto Collision Near Cooks Corner
A Sunday afternoon crash about 6:30 on the State highway just east of Cook's Corner involved a Ford carrying Mr and Mrs Edward Chaplin and their son returning from Harpswell to East Brunswick and a Studebaker Six with six occupants owned by Fred L Brackley Bath. The Ford was struck while turning off the highway. no one was injured. The Ford suffered running board, tire, and rear-end damage. The Studebaker radiator was damaged but continued to Bath. Spectators blamed neither party and noted the need for clearer signals as cars leave the highway.

Apprentices Train On Cargo Cruisers For Merchant Marine
The U S Shipping Board launches a new training fleet of cargo cruisers led by the Alabat. Five ships will operate as model school vessels with living quarters for apprentices, offering two months of initial sea training and paths to officer or engine ranks.
