Maine voters face a special election to consider bonds funded by federal road building aid amid a push for highway improvements. The vote also includes a proposal for a state pier in Portland to boost harbor commerce and eastern shipping prospects.
A two hour sunset court in Woolwich heard testimony on alleged cow torture involving Samuel Gordon of Bath and Hiram Walker of the S P C A. The case, postponed to Thursday morning, centers on whether Gordon permitted cruelty to a cow, later found emaciated. Witnesses detailed the cow’s purchase, transport, and improvised killing plans while lawyers debated ownership, intent, and religious objections.
Five cars carried about 25 workers from The Texas Steamship Co payroll and costs analysis departments to Garnet house for a shore dinner at Brunswick. After singing and stories led by Mrs. Walter Ts. Cummings, the group returned home late with a hearty evening and a lively drive back.

The three master Addie P McFadden lies at Providence Rhode Island loaded for Genoa with a cargo of lumber. The lumber had been held since the Elizabeth T Doyle sank while undergoing transport. The McFadden now chartered to carry the lumber at about 87 dollars per thousand, potentially earning near ten thousand dollars in freight.

The Woolwich Sagadahoc Ferry Sunday night meeting drew interest with Miss Minerva French of the University of Maine speaking about the YWCA conference at Silver Bay. A vocal solo by Leland Ames and singing led by Mr. Porter complemented the program as residents and visitors shared news of summer activities and local comings and goings.
The Colonial club approved increasing active membership from 175 to 200 at Tuesday night’s meeting and will vote again in October. Treasurer salary adjustments will be considered. President Andrew S. Merrill led, Ramsay reported on clambake changes, and an entertainment committee of five was formed for fall and winter social events. Members added include Reuben F. Mann, Furber I. Teel, and Randall F. Cooke. transfers and restorations affected W. Percy Marks, Morris W. Potter, Charles Lester Smith, and others.
Fifty candidates will be admitted to membership in Katahdin commandery U O G C on Friday night. The degree work will be performed by Gardiner commandery’s team at Sebenon hall in Woolwich, which has been engaged for the event. A supper at 6 30 will precede the degree ceremony followed by dancing with Pomeroy’s orchestra.
Mrs Margeret Ann Wheaton 60 longtime manager of the Postal Telegraph Co local office in Bath died suddenly of heart trouble Friday night at her home 352 Main Street. She fell ill after leaving work and died after physician arrival with daughter Miss Helen Wheaton an operator at the exchange present. Survived by husband Frederick Wheaton who died earlier, daughter Helen, son Walter of Appleton Wis, and a Worcester sister. Member Central Congregational Church.
Personal notes record Fred N. Dennett of Washington, D C visiting his father John Dennett in this city. Capt and Mrs Charles Blair and Mr and Mrs George R Copeland and son George left Sunday for a four or five day motoring trip in the White Mountains.
The Coast Guard will change its uniform to align with other services. Full dress cap frock coats belts and trousers are abolished. Commissioned officers will wear a navy double breasted service coat and a shield above sleeve stripes. Old cap retained with larger crown. Old uniforms usable until January 1 1921.

Miss Mildred Bowen and Miss Ruth Jordan return from the White Mountains. Mr. and Mrs. B E Foster of Manchester N H, guests of the Cahills, head home after a motor trip to Bar Harbor. Arthur Gediman and Arthur Sprague depart in a Buick for a two month tour to Boston Providence Washington D C and Duluth, then Bath.
Cumberland county divorce mill likely to run overtime as 78 libels were filed at the fall term, possibly the highest number in Superior court history. Cases include Mertie Briry of Portland versus Edward Briry of Bath for desertion and cruelty, Hattie Normand of Brunswick versus Harry Normand for infidelity, with requests to resume maiden name Hattie Powers and other local notes. Eugene Desmond of Bath stars in the New York production She Walks in Her Sleep, touring from Labor Day through Christmas, and Miss Mary Mcleod of Oak Street has returned from a Brooklyn visit.
The Genesia chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star holds its first meeting Friday evening resuming work after the summer respite.
