Bath Iron Works eyeing sixth shipyard set for longer ships

The Bath Iron Works Corp considers enlarging capacity by adding a sixth set of ways, possibly reconfiguring the South Yard to launch longer vessels. A ledge in the Kennebec near the Houghton yard may be partially removed to avoid launching obstructions and allow future hulls beyond destroyers. Two sponsors will christen the USS Gleaves, with dates around early December, while current keel work for destroyers 182 and 183 progresses.
