Bath Iron Works urged channel improvements for navy needs
Bath Iron Works president William S. Newell told War Department engineers in Bath that in a national emergency the yard could build larger ships and the Texas Company shipyard could reopen for sea going cargo vessels. He urged a 27 foot deep channel 175 yards wide from Bath to the sea to ease navigation, enable larger vessels, and justify refuge and repair services.

Bath celebrated William S. Newell president of Bath Iron Works with a testimonial dinner by The Propeller Club of Portland. Gov Barrows, Rep Oliver, Rep Brewster, Archibald Main, Dr Kershner, Admiral Robert, City Councillor Martin and others spoke about Bath ships and the plant’s reopening. More than 200 attended as Newell praised his staff and traced Bath shipbuilding history.

Late Wellesley professor had ties to Bath and Italy
Margaret Hastings Jackson emeritus Italian professor of Wellesley College died September 25 in Wellesley Mass. She shared lifelong links to Bath through her father sculptor John Adams Jackson born in Bath. A friend of Bath residents Miss L Theresa Moses and Mrs Winona Tilton Stinson, she aided war work in France in 1918 and spoke multiple languages valued by Allied armies. Her husband’s work and a Reading Girl statue were lost to fire or war. Prof Jackson attended St Andrews Episcopal Church. her father’s Bath home stood near Bath Iron Works.
