Once Elaborate Ship Carvings No Longer Seen
As old time clipper ships faded, Bath’s ship carving era ended with figure heads giving way to block letters and cabinet work. Carving paid well in summer and winter, with craftsmen progressing from apprentice to finisher before painters completed pieces for bolting into ships bows. Mrs. Cecil Pullen of Bath reportedly nicked a mayflower in Arrowsic on Nov. 17.
