The new Maine Central rail road station in Bath nears completion. Its red brick exterior features a cupola with a gold leaf weather vane modeled after a Bath destroyer. Inside, chrome streamlined seating, concealed radiators, and modern fixtures echo airport waiting rooms.
Bath Teachers' Club sponsored a Thursday night event at Morse high school gym for its scholarship fund. Forty tables featured auction, contract, and 63 games. rummage sale in October also aided the fund. Winners included Mrs. Fred Hayward and Miss Mary Brown in women’s contract, Nathan W. Watson and Raymond Reed in men’s, and Mrs. John E. Hayes and Mrs. Raleigh Glynn in auction. A full committee organized tables, serving, and refreshments.
Miss Verna Stults head of Morse High School Home Economics was chosen as Maine delegate to the American Vocational Association meeting in Boston December 11 to 13. A Farmington Normal School graduate, she succeeds Mrs Janette Woodbury and also directs Cadet Teachers work with the University of Maine and Farmington Normal School.
The Canteen Company of Chicago takes over meals for Bath Iron Works employees starting about December 1 as the plant shifts to a three shift day. A commissary will cook food. four stands in the plant will serve meals and a dedicated truck will deliver hot meals to each stand. The plan employs about 70 men across cooks, stand managers, kitchen helpers, sandwich and coffee workers. The state employment office is already booking applicants.
Navy Recruiting Station Portland received a letter from Mrs. Miriam Kidd of Newport inviting Maine Navy Mothers to join Navy Mothers Clubs of America. The group aids mothers of sailors and promotes welfare for service members. Haven Sawyer of Bangor, tied to the America First Committee, protested city hall not hosting a committee meeting.
Mrs. Wellington A. Moore of Weeks street travels to Cape Elizabeth to visit her daughter Mrs. Bartholomew O'Donnell.
West Bath grange enjoyed a Thanksgiving program directed by Mrs. William A. Armstrong with readings, music, and tableaux. Notables included Franklin Howe earning all seven grange degrees in a single year and Mrs. D Wylie Lemont recounting Worcester trip experiences. A turkey quiz, poems, and a closing Bringing in the Sheaves preceded refreshments and dancing.
A three dollar Y M C A membership for a deserving boy was approved at the Dike P T A meeting. A canned goods drive for hospital aid will occur next meeting. Civilian Defense reports were shared and volunteer registrations collected. The Dental Clinic Tea plan was announced for November 26 at Cosmopolitan Club. Boy Scout Troop 52 meeting was canceled for the week.
Miss Valnessa Easton daughter of Commander Glenn H Easton USN Ret and Mrs Easton of Berkeley Calif now a UC junior has won the Blue Ribbon at the Millis college Horse Show She also earned first place in Boots and Saddles riding club events Her family recently relocated from Bath to Berkeley with Commander Easton taking a civilian post in San Francisco and their son Glenn H Easton Jr remaining in Philadelphia with the Pennsylvania Shipping Corp
The South End P T A set December 13 for its annual Christmas sale and supper at Washington street rooms. Committees for cooked food aprons greens gifts and books grabs and more were named. Plans for a Bath dental clinic tea at the Cosmopolitan club and a membership drive ending December 2 were announced. The next meeting is December 2 with Red Cross sewing and noon dinner.
Bath communities join Armistice Day Red Cross enrollment driving a high turnout. The piece outlines Red Cross work at home and abroad, including hospital supplies, garments, layettes, and surgical dressings. It notes funds allocations, services to ex servicemen, training programs, braille transcription, and disaster relief. It highlights the Fall Roll Call as the largest ever and lists local office hours and meeting notices.
Bids were opened for an eight room wing at Morse High School. Low bid came from Daniel Cunningham Construction Co of Boston at 113,800 dollars. Other bids ranged up to 138,490 dollars. The project hinges on approval by the Boston office of the Federal Works Agency before a contract is awarded and construction begins. The wing will add classrooms and support new courses for the growing student body.
Sagadahoc Pomona Grange holds its annual meeting at Merrymeeting Grange Hall Bowdoinham with Mrs Alfreda M Perkins of Hardings as Master Charles M White of Augusta and Mrs White install the newly elected officers The meeting notes Perkins as one of two women serving as Pomona masters in Maine Whidden of Lagrange leads the smallest Pomona West Penobscot 245 members Orange the largest Sagadahoc Pomona grew from 1450 to a larger total as members advance toward the national grange session in Worcester Massachusetts this month.
The Maine State Grange announces its annual session program with a Dec 1 opening. Secretary Nellie L. Hascall of Auburn distributes the booklet from Grange Herald publishers. Key events include Lewiston Armory reception, morning and afternoon sessions, remarks by Master F Ardine Richardson, speaker C H Smith, memorial service, and special features for juvenile hour. Speeches by Gov. Sumner Sewall, Senator Wallace Tl White, and other leaders forecast, with further degrees and events through Thursday.
A gas explosion in the acetylene tank at Dr. George W. Hibbs dentist office on the Sagadahock Block second floor caused a smoky blaze Saturday. Firefighters used torches and ammonium tanks to control the fire, with walls and woodwork sustaining damage while smoke and chemicals injured equipment. A crowd gathered as the blaze appeared more serious than it was. Damage estimates were not yet determined.
