First Aid for Snow Damaged Trees From U S Department
The U S Department of Agriculture outlines first aid for trees damaged by a snow storm in New England. Key steps include removing dangerous limbs, repairing trunk injuries with smooth jagged edges, painting wounds, bolting split crotches, and using cables or block and tackle to realign limbs. Saw off broken limbs flush with the trunk and avoid pruning stubs. Apply asphalt or Bordeaux paint and a shellac border if possible to protect wounds. Maintain care after repairs and monitor for defects.
