McLendon Profited From Athens Bond Deals Disclosed

The Athens street railway bond transactions yielded about 1,500 in profits credited to Chairman McLendon. Testimony shows initial profit of 1,312.50 and a second profit of 188.28, with funds paid by F D Sullivan of New York. Patterson of Central Bank described the transfers and noted McLendon’s role in arranging buyers and sellers. McLendon defended the ethics, suggesting law changes to bar commissioners from holding railroad securities. The committee discussed correspondence with Sullivan and McLendon’s intent to aid Governor Smith’s administration and Georgia capital influx.
