Athens area seeks donations for first Stand Down event

Athens County plans its first Stand Down to aid homeless residents with a 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday October 7 at the Athens County Fairgrounds. The volunteer drive asks for backpacks sleeping bags blankets boots tents hygiene clothing and winter gear plus diapers first aid and lip balm. Donations accepted at multiple local sites through Sept 30 or Oct 5 for remaining locations. The aim is to assist about 300 people while raising awareness of homelessness and veterans’ needs.

Ohio sheriff says suspect confessed to another killing

Marion County Sheriff Tim Bailey said Shawn Grate admitted killing a woman who sold magazines door to door about 2003 to 2005. He linked Grate to three other slayings and hinted at more victims as investigators probe deaths in Richland and Marion counties.

Lawyer challenges release of suspect juvenile records in Ohio case

Ohio University Homecoming Parade set to return to Court Street

The 2016 Homecoming Parade on October 8 will start 10 a.m. at Union and Factory Streets and follow a route returning to Court Street before ending at Templeton Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Events run October 4–8, with activities including Paint the Town Green and a Guinness World Record cake wake. The Bobcats face Bowling Green at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Peden Stadium.

Police officer reunites with drowning rescue at pool

Columbus officer James Poole met Christopher Jones, the man he saved from a pool drowning nearly 20 years ago when Jones was 5. Jones saw Poole in a police Facebook photo and surprised him with a reunion organized by the division. Jones attended with his 5 year old daughter.
