Judge rules city immunity in personal injury suit in Athens

A judge dismissed the personal injury claim against the city of Athens in a case brought by Brad A. Wharton LLC doing business as Broney's Alumni Grill over a 2015 basement flood. The court kept officials in the case only in their official capacity, stepping toward a broader liability assessment while the city’s immunity question remains unresolved. The suit seeks 21,119 for property damage and cleanup costs with the broader claim totaling over 25,000 dollars.

Athens County Sheriff Office first in area certified under state standards

The Athens County Sheriff's Office becomes the first in the area to receive Ohio state certification for police standards. The Ohio Collaborative Board announced in January it would certify agencies across nearly 1000 departments, focusing on use of force, deadly force, and recruitment. ACSO is one of about 70 agencies certified, with an on site review due within two months and certification continuing through 2016.

Sunbury Ohio veterans families and groups push for a permanent funding plan for the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial. They seek up to 1 million dollars to establish a legacy trust to cover 25,000 dollars annual maintenance and 600 dollars per new marker for the 283 markers honoring Ohioans killed in combat since 9/11. Ohio shelter euthanizes over 50 dogs amid distemper scare

The Franklin County Dog Shelter in Columbus says it euthanized more than 50 dogs after distemper was found and a prolonged quarantine would be inhumane. Dogs showed severe respiratory and other issues. more may be euthanized. Remaining dogs will be isolated for four to six weeks and not available for adoption. The shelter will review intake procedures to prevent future outbreaks.

Michigan man to stand trial in Athens County

Jelani Walker a 36 year old Michigan resident is set for trial in Athens County Common Pleas Court on felony drug charges. He faces one count each of aggravated trafficking in drugs aggravated possession of drugs and possession of cocaine. Walker was at a Monday pretrial hearing with attorney Jim Wallace who was appointed after previous attorney Thomas Gerken withdrew.

Ohio gas prices ease for the week with regular gas averaging 2.07 dollars per gallon in Monday's AAA, OPIS, and WEX survey. The decline from 2.16 dollars a week ago and 2.10 dollars last month shows fuel costs easing. Last year at this time the average was 2.24 dollars.
