Big Brothers program connects youths with male volunteers

In Burr Oak State Park Moonville and Nelsonville pool areas, Eric Long spends weekends with his Little brother Ever through Big Brothers Big Sisters. Evan in Athens Vinton Washington and Meigs Counties waited for years on a matching list before being paired.

Big Brothers Big Sisters seeks male mentors in need of volunteers

Tracy Kelly says more than 30 boys await matches and stresses the community need for male mentors. Long, a former Big Brothers Big Sisters worker now with Ohio University, praises the program as a good match with Evan and his grandmother. Volunteers commit four to six hours monthly for a year and can share activities like lunch, park trips, homework, or hobbies such as building models or Frisbee.

Athens Area Chamber Nets 35000 From Steak Fry Auction

The Athens Area Chamber of Commerce raised about $35 000 at the 22nd annual Love Athens and Keep it Local steak fry and auction held at Kiser's Barbecue in The Eclipse Company Town The Plains. Approximately 160 chamber members attended as blues outside were performed by Charles Godwin. The event supports chamber missions and keeps membership rates down while funding non profit members and Ambassadors who select local groups for grants.

Good deed from Davis turns in wallet and cash

Chauncey resident Ronnie Davis found a wallet with 300 dollars at a Marathon gas station and returned it to the store manager without opening it. His neighbor Bob Finnearty praises Davis as honest and hardworking.
