Martin pick marks new beacon for early education program

Becky Martin was chosen from 12 applicants after a two-stage interview by the DC Board. The second posting drew ten candidates including Kim Arthur and Angela Gibbs, who withdrew. Superintendent Davis called Martin a tremendous asset whose dedication to families will aid Beacon School students.

Ronald J Downey 83 of Auburn California died July 20 2016. He was a longtime educator with degrees from Regis Creighton and Nebraska and taught at Notre Dame and Ohio University where he chaired microbiology and zoology. He is survived by his wife Mary Ann five children and many relatives. A memorial service is Aug 13 2016 at St Teresa's Of Avila Auburn. William Taylor Beale 88 of Athens died July 24 2016. An inventor and professor at Ohio University he held degrees from Caltech and MIT and pursued peaceful engineering aims. He was married to Carol Brand Beale and built a private life in rural Appalachia with family and projects.

William Goins 1961—2016 Pioneer of Sunpower and community leader

William Goins lived as an innovator in renewable energy and a mentor to youth. He advanced a solar powered home and a leaf vehicle, helped found Sunpower Inc, and supported carbon reduction groups. He hosted youth science seminars and inspired generations with practical lessons in cooperation and problem solving. He is survived by his wife, three children, six grandchildren, two siblings, and a global network. A public memorial is planned in Athens. Contributions are invited to Community Solutions, Union of Concerned Scientists, and Rural Action.
