Appalachian Medical College pitched for Ohio University
Ohio Valley Health Services Foundation executive director Jack Farrington urged Ohio University to create an Appalachian Medical College funded outside the university budget to train family medicine doctors for rural Appalachia. Governor Gilligan warned such a costly project would require solid long term financing, while Farrington insisted the plan would be less expensive than a traditional medical school and focused on classroom space for family medicine. He noted regional health manpower shortages and proposed engaging federal Appalachian Regional Commission funds and state cooperation to develop a new training model without heavy research facilities.
