Ouster of Weinfurtner Dominates Athens County Board Action

Athens County School Board members Pratt Thomas and Moore oust county School Supt Robert L Weinfurtner and name George E Christman as his replacement amid questions about process and transparency. The meeting echoes 1970 events when the same trio opposed state aid for a pilot education center, with limited comment from involved officials. Esther Dailey was absent and would have opposed the motion. Pratt claims to know the reasons but will not discuss them.

Kennedy Charges Laos Aid Misuse

Senator Edward M. Kennedy accused a large share of U S relief funds for Laos of aiding Laotian military forces under CIA supervision. He cited a four year total of 27.4 million dollars diverted from refugee aid to cover paramilitary support, while AID disputes a broad refugee classification and says most beneficiaries are dependents of fighters. The GAO report Kennedy cites allegedly documents the diversion, though the AID spokesman maintains some fighters receive aid as part of refugee relief.
