Markets end week flat as Dow and S&P slip and Nasdaq gains

U S stock indexes closed mostly lower on Friday with the Dow down 37.05 points and the S&P 500 off 1.74 as traders lock profits near record highs. The Nasdaq rose 4.50 points while energy shares rose on higher crude prices. Retailers Macy’s Kohl’s Nordstrom J C Penney and Dillard’s reported varied results while July retail sales showed a softer tone offset by strong auto and online purchases.

Tepid July retail data temper US growth outlook

US retail sales slipped in July as consumers pulled back on shopping and dining, though auto, online, and catalog sales rose. Prime Day by Amazon boosted online spending 1.3 percent, while producer prices fell 0.4 percent. Analysts foresee slower Fed action with growth around 1 percent in H1 2016 and a potential near 3 percent in Q3, amid robust hiring and cooling inflation.
