Smash It Demolition Derby's Inc. of London Ohio marked its 17th year hosting the featured event on Thursday night, with winners determined by one-on-one duels in both Mini and Big Class divisions.
At the Athens County Fair 35 Demolition Derby Mini and Smash It Leaf entrants duel for top honors as Nick Hampshire wins the Mower Class over Chase Krebs and Tyler Cummings. Todd Danner and Dustin Buckley steer longtime derby entries amid two Mini Class heats and a winner take all Smash It Leaf final. Buckley, the 2013 and 2014 Mini Class champion, earns a step toward the prize. SEE DEMO ON PAGE A2
Alexander Elementary and district officials celebrated two new shade structures to make the rear playground usable for heat sensitive and disabled students. The $15,962 project was funded by $7,500 from the PTO, $6,145 from Athens Foundation grant, and $2,000 from the district. Jesse Stock of the Athens Foundation noted the effort helps students who previously could not participate in playground activities. Structures will be removed before winter due to low snow loads.
Athens seeks decriminalization ballot measure failed to meet valid signature requirements after Elections Director Debbie Quivey reported 317 valid signatures from 319 needed, with 103 mismatched addresses and 83 unregistered voters. Supporters dispute the tally, noting some disallowed signatures may be verifiable.
The Poultry Dress-up Contest showcased 4-H members creativity with rubber-dub-dub ducks and chicken costumes. Kara and Kayla Sheridan earned first by costuming their ducks Waddles and Chip as baker and butcher. Carlene Carroll placed third with a mottled Houdan dressed as Mickey Mouse, inspired by a porch goose.
