Prophecy of the future as cars rise over horse drawn era

Detroit artist Fred Nash in 1910 warned of the automobile boom with a cartoon titled Look mamma there's a horse. He labeled it A Prophecy of the Future. The horse receded from drawing carriages while business activity kept the horse in use until the great war reshaped industry.

Cook until tender, stand in syrup overnight, repeat for three or four days, then dry in sun while turning daily. Dust with powdered sugar and store between wax paper in non airtight jars to prevent mildew.

The Spirit of Seventy six, created by Archibald M. Willard, grew from a Wellington wagon shop background. A study titled Pluck No 1 attracted James H. Ryder, leading to the Seven ty six work. Its center figure was inspired by Willard’s father Rev Daniel Willard, changing the piece from comic to symbolic.
