Christmas Gifts to Arcadia Poor

Nine Arcadia ladies spent a day at Mrs. L. Emerson's home to make garments for the needy through the Cooperative Arcadians. They bought waists and other undergarments with a club treasury donation of five dollars, while members contributed clothing worth five dollars. A follow up meeting planned to finish waists and fill baskets with food for Christmas distribution.

Questionnaires Mailed by District Exemption Board

Questionnaires were mailed Saturday by the district exemption board to men of the draft. The burden to secure and return them within seven days rests on the registrants. Failure to return the forms within a week can lead to punishment up to one year in jail and may delay induction into military service.

Beer Confiscated from Mexican Held by City Marshal

City Marshal Treen holds twelve dozen bottles of Fastside beer seized after a Mexican man intended a party. The plan is to keep the beer about 30 days then pour it out, though the bottles may be saved for sale. The stock is locked in the city hall vault awaiting disposal.

Four Hundred Seventy One Acres of Oranges Yield Early

Central California districts around Porterville Exeter Lindsay Globe Woodlake and Success report 471 acres with about 90 trees per acre yielding 40 480 packed boxes and roughly a half box per tree. C O Banks returned from the north noting the crop may run 20 to 25 percent. Banks Bros has shipped 166 cars so far this season, mainly from northern districts.

Board of Trade Meeting Delayed For Christmas Week

The Board of Trade will meet Thursday night instead of Monday due to Christmas Tuesday. A Pasadena Tournament of Roses committee urged Arcadia to enter a float, likely not to be done though some motor care with Arcadia pennants may appear in private machine class. Mrs Anita Baldwin may be asked to enter a float for Red Star and Arcadia jointly, to be discussed Thursday.

Trustees Contribute To Red Cross War Effort

City trustees at Wednesday night meeting pooled funds and joined the Red Cross. D. W. Sims led by placing a silver dollar on the table, followed by A. L. Parker and others. The board previously voted 60 to the local branch and planned waiving 10 monthly during the war.

Thrift Drive Aims to Mobilize Arcadia Students and Merchants

Chas W Stewart plans a war certificate thrift campaign in Arcadia to involve school children and the entire city. He will seek Board of Trade aid and asks merchants to allocate ad space in the Journal to support the effort and boost sales of war thrift stamps.

Arcadia Donates 50 Dollars to Yuletide Fund

The city will give $50 to the National Defenders Yuletide committee of Los Angeles to supply Christmas boxes to soldiers from Arcadia and other districts. City trustees approved the appropriation after letters and telegrams to Miss Ethel Grimes and C. D. Harris.

Frank Louth Appointed Deputy to Aid Dog Poisoning Probe

City Marshal Treen secured council approval to appoint Frank Louth as a special deputy in Arcadia. The two bicyclist officers will pursue the suspected poisoner, a Mexican national, whom Treen believes is guiding crews involved in the crime.

Heifer Twins Aid Food Effort at Parker Ranch

Following President Wilson's advice the Parker ranch heifer produced twin calves this week. The cows, named Mother and babies, are reported to be doing nicely and contribute to increasing the food supply.
