Arcadia First Presbyterian to Dedicate New Church Sunday

The new Arcadia First Presbyterian Church will be dedicated with services starting at 10 a.m. Rev D N Harnish of San Gabriel will speak at the Sunday school hour, and Rev J H Speer will deliver the dedicatory sermon at 11 a.m. Full week of services follows with multiple speakers and a cantata.

County to Share Cost on Breakwater Site Visit

County officials discussed sharing the construction cost of a breakwater in Santa Anita Wash with a 50 50 proposal. City engineer H S Gierlich briefed Arcadia trustees, and AL Hamilton, chairman of the board, examined the site. Bids were invited but action was deferred pending the county’s formal proposal. W Treen, Arcadia city marshal, was ill with pleurisy this week.

MISS DOWNE AS NURSE

Vera Downe daughter of Mr and Mrs A B Downe well known in Monrovia and Duarte has completed a three months probation as nurse at Good Samaritan hospital Los Angeles and plans to go to the French front Mr Downe says she is eager to join the front lines and they are pleased with her success in the hospital He has returned to Arizona where he serves as general manager of the Silver King mine.

Clean-Up Day Sparks Arcadia Weed Removal

Arcadia residents joined a weed clean-up drive after a Board of Trade call. R H Schwartzkopf urged members to lead by example, but turnout was small though sites like the old Oakwood hotel lot were cleared. City trustees meanwhile discussed a weed removal ordinance for vacant lots.

Service flag with 28 stars gifted to Arcadia city

A 28 star service flag was presented at a Wednesday night city trustees meeting by Mrs. Millard on behalf of the Arcadia Co operatives. President Stoker accepted for the city and Trustee Parker noted 28 of 36 Arcadia registrants have gone to the front, the highest rate in California.

Arcadia likely to become a county Farm Bureau center with Duarte and Monrovia. A three-town committee will meet in Monrovia to align the units, with Arcadia invited to shift from current La Mancha Park Sierra Madre alignment.

Diverging Bids For Grand View Pumping Plant

City trustees received widely diverging bids Wednesday night for a new pumping plant to serve the Grand View district. Bids for the plant ranged from 850 to 2554 dollars, mainly due to pump types, with trench work bid rejected for a string attached. Four pipe bids followed, showing varied prices, prompting an adjourned meeting Friday to review before awarding the contract.

Falls Over Precipice In Fish Canyon Injury

P R Molique of 615 South Sixth street Alhambra plunged from a precipice in Fish canyon onto granite boulders on New Year’s day. Forest Ranger A J Mueller and others assisted rescuers. Molique suffered a broken leg and extensive bruises and was carried two miles to a Renaker ambulance and taken to Haben hospital.

Cause of Fire Unknown at Parker Home Blaze

Mystery surrounds the cause of a Christmas night fire that destroyed M. W. Parker's small house on Orange Avenue. Parker, inside the home, heard crackling, saw the ceiling ignite, and the fire quickly consumed the dwelling before help arrived.

City trustees donate 60 to Red Cross and pledge monthly support

At a Board of Trade meeting last Friday night the city trustees transferred 60 to the Red Cross. They announced an intention to give 10 each month to the Red Cross during the war period.

Arcadia Board of Trade plans bell for church

The Arcadia Board of Trade voted to give $20 toward a new Presbyterian church bell with a possible increase to $55. Fountains Planned for Arcadia Schools to Cut Disease Risk

Sanitary drinking fountains meeting state law will be installed in Arcadia schools. The touchless designs prevent lips from contacting the water, reducing disease spread. Board member F. W. Treen said the fountains will cost between five and eight dollars each and have been ordered.

Y M C A Convention at Monrovia Friday

The Los Angeles County Y M C A holds its annual convention at Monrovia on Friday January 18 with a dinner at 6 30 at the Methodist church. Tickets priced at fifty cents and transportation details will be announced next week by C A Griffith chairman of the county committee.

No Rain Threatens Water For Alfalfa Growers

City trustees warned Wednesday night that without rain water may be unavailable for ranchers proposing alfalfa crops. President Stoker said there will be no water to spare and advised growers to be forewarned.

German language dropped from Monrovia schools

Monrovia school trustees discontinued German classes after the holidays. The books were interned for the war and will remain unused during the period. The action aligns with measures in other districts to drop German from the curriculum.
