South Gains From Cotton Trade To Asia And Japan

The south’s cotton industry surged from 1880 to 1901 with rising bale counts and values. Exports to China climbed from 75 million to 140 million yards of cotton cloth, with 221 million yards in 1899, then 192 million in 1900 and 83.9 million in 1901. Unmanufactured cotton shipped to Japan rose to over 111 million pounds by 1898 and peaked at 161.6 million in 1900, dipping in 1901 for a noted reason. The Boxer rebellion reduced demand in China and Japan, hitting the south hard and underscoring the interest in reopening Asian trade and restoring peace in the Philippines.
