Stark Named Chief of Naval Operations Amid Succession

Rear Admiral Harold R. Stark, commander of the cruisers of the shuttle force, will become the United States Navy’s highest ranking officer when he succeeds Admiral William D. Leahy as chief of naval operations on May 6. Stark, 58, will serve a four year term with the rank of full admiral. Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., November 12, 1880, he graduated from the Naval Academy in 1903 and rose to rear admiral in 1934.
