Cold Wave Kills Fruit in Hilands

A severe cold wave damaged fruit crops across Hilands with trees and shrubs harmed. A light Wed Thu shower yielded only 1.7 inches of moisture while eastern areas near Alpine reported six to eight inches. Temperatures then rose sharply and springlike weather followed. A similar freeze last year wiped out fruit in the region.

Storm and frost ruin Apple crop in Fort Davis region

Apple, peach, pear and apricot trees suffered from a late week storm and freezing temperatures. Frost and blizzard conditions midweek killed much of the fruit set, with temperatures falling to 17 to 20 degrees. An orchardist saw possible scarce buds that might fruit.

Funeral Services For Arthur Allen Held Here Friday

Arthur C Allen aged 38 died of pneumonia at a San Angelo hospital after an influenza illness. He had managed the Ray Willoughby ranch 15 miles south of Alpine for just over three years and was born in Eden Texas. His wife and two children Patricia 11 and Charles 8 will stay here until the school term ends.

Welfare Workers To Meet In Alpine

Thirty five or four visitors from ten West Texas counties will attend a district welfare workers meeting at the American Legion hall in Alpine starting at 9 a.m. County Judge R B Slight will give the welcome. speakers include R E Turrentine El Paso district TRC, J M Goodel e El Paso division of employment Miss Ruth Bailey State Welfare Department Paul Reed El Paso Dr Joel Wright Brewster County health officer District Attorney Alan Fraser Miss M Claire McGuire county health nurse. A noon luncheon is sponsored by Jeff Davis and Brewster counties. Music by Miss Mary Bess Hamilton and Wilfred Carrico precedes a scenic trip into the Davis mountains and a barbecue at Fort Davis hosted by Presidio county.

Alpine Band Debuts Low at Region 8 Meet in Odessa

Alpine High School band made its first sectional appearance at the Region 8 contest in Odessa last weekend. In Class C, Alpine scored 13 points while Kermit led with 159. In marching, Alpine placed in the third division, ahead of only Garden City. Forty-three band members and several parents joined the trip.

A grassland and timber fire on the Gage ranch in Mount Ord country 20 miles southeast of here burned 15 sections after breaking out last Sunday. Fire was thought controlled Sunday night but wind reignited it. local ranchers, others, and CCC crews from Balmorhes responded on Monday.

Bulls Sold After Ad In Mountain Peak

Mrs. J C Bird advertised 15 head of registered bulls for sale on her ranch south of here. Willis McCutcheon of Fort Davis saw the ad and bought the lot for 70 cents.

Only Trained Antelope Corraller in Texas

Fort Davis state game warden Tom Redford is the lone trained corraller in Texas and led the first state attempt to capture and relocate antelope. He studied New Mexico methods with Paul Russell, returning with equipment and know how to move antelope off Brennand ranch. The initial drive captured 33 of 42 driven, with 15 in a later run, and work paused for winter.

Enrollment Up At Alpine Independent School District

An increase of 78 in the scholastic population of Alpine Independent School District is reported by census enumerator M. P. Slover as of last weekend. The 1939 total is 1164, up from 1086 in 1936, with four colored children of school age enumerated this year, and most children living within Alpine city limits.

Drilling Advances at Wilcox Test Well Near Alpine

A depth of about 600 feet was reported yesterday at the H. D. Wilcox W. H. Kokernot No. 2 test well four miles south of Alpine in lime formation. The test lies on Sec. 23 BC J. W. Massey survey. There are over 600 incorporated towns in Texas.

Coast Guard officer killed as plane crashes near Alpine

A Coast Guard officer died when a plane crashed near Alpine. The incident halted a planned Rio Grande journey by six men in two rowboats who intended to paddle from Lajitas through Santa Helena and Mariscal canyons toward Big Bend National Park. The expedition included Rev Milton F. Hill, Sheriff J D Bunton, J B Little, Chaplain P Madden, Captain Collier, and R I Bledsoe, with aims to reach Santa Helena, Fern canyon, and Del Walker place before Hot Springs.

Death of W. A. Weakley Brings Local Notices

W. A. Weakley, a former Alpine and Marathon resident, died in San Antonio last Saturday after years of ill health. He had lived with his daughter, Mrs. Wm. Baines, in San Antonio. Survived by two daughters, Mrs. Will Baines of San Antonio and Louise Weakley, a San Antonio teacher, and a son Ward of Hot Springs Arkansas. Niece Anja Wilson of Alpine. El Paso Business Delegation to Attend Chamber Meeting

Representatives of 50 El Paso business concerns will travel on two chartered buses to attend the regular monthly chamber of commerce meeting. They will arrive late this afternoon via Fort Davis and the McDonald Observatory, with 12 entertainers including the Bluebonnet Square Dance team from Hotel Cortez club. A free courthouse performance follows a 7 p.m. dinner at the college cafeteria. Plates are 75 cents with CC office reservations.

Coast Guard Lieutenant Killed In Alpine Plane Crash

Lieut Robert L Grantham 30 of the U S Coast Guard died when a Coast Guard plane crashed on the Mrs Kate Nevill ranch south of Alpine during a severe storm last week. Clifford J Hudder escaped by parachute as the crew tried to save the aircraft. The wreckage was found in Mount Ord country southeast of Alpine after planes from several points searched, and Grantham's body was taken to Arlington National Cemetery. Surviving widow resides in El Paso.
