Mrs F F Ross Dies Here After Brief Illness

Mrs F F Ross aged 50 died Monday night after a short illness. A native of Kentucky her family moved to Texas in 1830 and later to Alpine where she lived with her husband who works at Sul Ross College. She leaves two daughters Mildred 11 and Margaret 15 a sister Mrs Elwin C Wood of Frankfort Ky and two brothers J M and R L Dickerson of Louisville Ky. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church with Rev Franklin R Poage officiating and burial in Kim Grove Cemetery.

Alpine School Band to Enter Region 8 Contest in Odessa

Alpine High School band under Russell Pinkerton will compete in the Region 8 contest in Odessa. About 43 students, 20 towns, and 22 bands form a new regional plan with eight regions. Alpine enters three classes in its first band competition, with many parents and patrons accompanying.

Former pastor Rev L W Bridges will lead revival meetings at Alpine Church starting this week under Rev J A Kearny supervision. Local congregation expects renewed interest and spiritual renewal from the event.

Soldier's Record Found In Fort Davis Envelope

Fort Davis resident Robert D. Mulhern holds an envelope containing his father Charles Mulhern’s army discharge and promotion papers. The records trace a 30 year U S Army career begun in 1825 in Atlanta with notes from Fort Griffin and old Fort Davis, detailing sergeant and ordnance sergeant appointments and a final discharge after long service.

Extension of Highway 90 Nears New Designation

Texas officials confirmed plans to extend the U S Highway 90 designation by upgrading 3 miles of the 1 mile feeder from Van Horn to a junction with U S Highway 62. The project includes drainage structures and grading approved by the Texas Highway Commission and U S Bureau of Public Roads. The effort, led by the El Paso chamber and Highway 60 association, seeks dual designation with U S 62 and extension into El Paso. The action awaits final commission decision.

Austin April 1 Senate action approves a bill by Senator H L Winfield to authorize the state park board to acquire land for a 788000 acre national park in the Big Bend Rio Grande region. The measure would transfer 132000 acres from the public school permanent fund and rely on private subscription to fund the purchase, with potential federal ownership for park development.

Improvements On U S Are Listed Highway 90 Project

Improvements on Highway No 90 east of Uvalde are listed with a projected cost of about 180000 and work planned within 60 days. J County Judge Bob Davis announced deeds have been obtained for all but two small tracts to widen and straighten the right of way. The plan centers on a new Leona River bridge of about 500 feet with a 40 foot roadway and sidewalks, plus replacement of drainage structures and channel straightening to improve flood runoff. Kokernot Test Depth of 550 Feet Reported

Drilling continues at the H. D. Wilcox W. H. Kokernot No. 2 well forty miles south of Alpine in lime formation. At about 550 feet this week no water has been encountered yet. The test lies on Section 23 in the J. V. Massey survey.

Alpine Contestants To Go To District Meet Next Week

Alpine winners in the big county meet will travel to Fort Stockton for the District 30 meet covering Reeves Pecos Ward Loving Brewster Terrell and Crockett counties. Rehearsals for the one act play Debt Takes a Holiday, which won first here, aim for Region 8. The cast includes Nancy Salisbury Ruth Slight Billy Fielder John L Bublett Oliver Blerschwale Douglas Bennett directed by Mrs Evelyn Waldrum. Region 8 will be held April 21-22 with schools from four far west district districts camping nearby.

Local Showers and Frost Visit Alpine Area This Week

A mix of near summer warmth and light frost covered the Alpine region this week. Strong south winds stirred dust Tuesday then a light shower followed by a grass rain north of Alpine on Wednesday afternoon. Frost yesterday caused no damage as surfaces stayed wet from the Wednesday shower. readings ranged with one-quarter to one-half inch falls reported.
