An eight gallon keg of beer held from a man who did not call for it in time was removed and seized from the C M and St P depot. The tale recounts wailing and teeth gnashing, a legal chase, and a sale price of fifteen dollars for the beer with thirteen people required to pay. The railroad stands idle as the keg disappears and shipment ends.
Publisher T Meredith of Successful Farming announces a $250,000 loan fund for Midwest farm youths aged 10 to 18 to buy pigs calves chickens and seed. Loans at 6 percent interest for three years, repayable to support increased food production and youth farming programs.
Mayor Jos Wadsworth proclaims May 12 to 18 as Clean Up and Paint Up Week in Algona. Citizens urged to tidy homes, paint where needed, remove weeds and pinses, and clear vacant lots to reduce fire risk and improve civic pride and city beauty.
The Clean Up and Paint Up Campaign organized by BE and committee members runs May 13 to May 21 with theme days for Fire Prevention, Front Yard, Weed, Paint, Back Yard, and Vacant Lot tasks. Communities to be inspected May 21. businesses and basements to be reviewed. Economics Club to haul waste. schools to collect paper on May 19.
Auditors office notes joint session of Palo Alto Emmet and Kossuth counties April 11 1917 to open bids for Drainage District No 84 contracts. H B Whitney lowest bid for open work and Olson Bros lowest for tile. Also bids for District No 132 and 40 considered and resolutions adopted adding Whittemore parcels to District 40. District 138 bidding and railroad damages settlement discussed.
The Swea City chapter of the American Red Cross holds a mass meeting Friday at 8 PM to recruit new members from Kossuth county. A parade by the rifle club, a Des Moines judge’s speech, and band music are planned with no admission fee. Officers include Mayme Hicken as chair and H. W. Carter as secretary. Membership options range from one dollar to one hundred dollars with no field service requirement. Also notices for a summer resort hotel rental at East Chain Minnesota at five dollars monthly.
