Des Moines Seeks Signal Corps Battalion for Central Division

The War Department asks Des Moines Iowa to raise one signal corps battalion of 259 officers and men. Unmarried telegraph or radio operators may enlist via Cant L. W. Ainsworth, 280 K. P. block, Des Moines. Examinations and calls to enlistment dates to be set, with men returning home until called, likely around the first call for the 600,000-strong conscript army. The central division plans eight field and two telegraph battalions, part of 28 field battalions and 10 telegraph battalions nationwide, totaling 44,? officers and 8,? enlisted men.

Seize Bogze in Dubuque raid targets city gambling

In Dubuque a four part raid by twenty men under Attorney General Havner seized hundreds of gallons of whisky and wines, over sixty slot machines, punch boards, gambling equipment, and bootlegger arrests. Prohibited goods valued at $5,000 were destroyed as operators consented to plead guilty. Several aided in the operation conducted under a new statute allowing sheriffs to assist.

O Connor Fatally Shoots Self After Divorce Petition

Maurice O Connor prominent Iowa attorney and former law partner of U S Senator William Kenyon died at a Fort Dodge hospital after a self inflicted gunshot wound. He had just dismissed a divorce petition against his wife and had called on family the night before. He had faced insanity charges and appealed to the state supreme court last fall and was released on bond.

Downs Family Sends Four Sons as War Volunteers

The Downs family of St Charles contributes four sons to military service. Loy and Roy are 21 year old twins, David is 26, and Ambrose brother Anbory is 28. All four enlisted in Company A, Third Regiment, Iowa National Guard, Winterset. Only their sister Ambrosa remains as a child in the home.

Saunders declares submarine problem solved by tests

New York, W L Saunders, chairman of the naval consulting board, announced the group had forwarded plans to Washington claiming the submarine problem has been solved in theory and by practical tests on the Atlantic coast. He declined to give further details as the matter was referred to Washington.
