Iowa Defense Council Votes to Census Men 18 to 60

Des Moines reports the Iowa division of the National Council of Defense held its first meeting with Governor Harding presiding. The council adopted a plan to census all males aged 18 to 60, join a state flag project, and discuss community houses and pensions for Northern Iowa brigade veterans.

Treasuerer W C Brown Dies After Illness in Des Moines

W I Brown Iowa state treasurer died at home from uraemin poisoning after a day of office work and rest. He had just reached his sixty fifth birthday April 21 and had heart trouble for two years. A former Wright county sheriff and longtime State Fair association member, he leaves a wife son Dr G B Brown of Clarion a daughter Mrs Pred Austin of Bruce Wisconsin and four grandchildren. The governor will appoint a successor to serve the remaining twenty months of the term.

Tama Raises Squadron for Tama County Cavalry

Over 100 men signed for enlistment in Tama county cavalry under Colonel Howell's regiment. General Logan dispatched an officer to inspect the squadron, with representation from every town in the county. Organizing permission granted, the enlistment was completed in three days.

Wanerus To Lead Iowa Hospital Unit For France

Theodore Wanerus adjutant of the intercollegiate intelligence bureau at the University of Iowa received orders to raise a hospital unit for medical corps work in France. The unit is among those to be dispatched by the government at once.

Hayner Enforces Blue Laws in Iowa Counties

Attorney General Hayner enforced the Sunday closing law in Polk and Iowa counties under Code section 5040 known as the Blue law. He offered no prophecy on future department activity and stated no favoritism toward any party in the TV brouhaha.
