Watermelons Prolific Year Boosts Grower Profits in State
Strong melon production lifted grower profits this year with prices 25 to 40 percent above last season. Brewers in the high district reported over half a million dollars in melon sales in July, while yields were trimmed by drought and a price drop late in July. A Barnwell area grower sold ten carloads from 33 acres and earned about 1000 from the crop after marketing costs, despite remaining stock and market fluctuations.
