Low bids named for South Carolina highway projects
The South Carolina Highway Department announced low bidders on twenty eight projects totaling about 3.5 million dollars. Projects include metal slope drains on U S Route 1 near Aiken, sand clay preparations for Route 394 near Kings Mill to Salley, and multiple bituminous surfacing and bridge works across Barnwell Laurens Florence Chester counties with bidders from Batesburg Gainesville Columbia and Charlotte among others.

Aiken Institute Opens September 14
The 1930 1931 term of the Aiken Institute will start Monday morning September 14 at 9 oclock with opening exercises in the auditorium. Improvements include library expansion with over one thousand donated books, cleaned rooms, upgraded plumbing and cafeteria, and the D B Henderson Annex tablet moved to the entrance hall. Municipal Pool Closes Monday After Summer

Well Known Colored Citizen Dies In Aiken
John Schofield a respected colored citizen of Aiken died at his home last Thursday night after months of illness. He was born in Aiken seventy years ago and was active in the community. He leaves wife Mary Ann Schofield and one sister. his only son died years ago after serving in France in World War I. Funeral services were held at Friendship Baptist Church Sunday afternoon with interment in the colored cemetery.
