Washington reports focus on Franklin D. Roosevelt's physical stamina for the presidency. Descriptions note leg impairment from infantile paralysis, requiring rests and two canes, while praising his overall fitness and capacity to endure campaign strain.
The South Carolina American Legion voted at its Charleston convention to hold its 1982 gathering in Aiken. The decision edged Greenville 284 to 220 and was secured by Aiken delegates with help from Columbia Camden Florence and Charleston posts and state leaders Lieutenant Governor James C. Sheppard and Solomon Blatt. More than 1500 visitors are expected from the Legion and Auxiliary.
Paving work on U S Highway 78 from Montmorenci to the Barnwell County line will start within days. Wolfe Construction of St Augustine will complete the 12.6 mile section in about 110 working days from July 15 at a contract price of 181679.46 dollars. Traffic will be detoured via Montmorenci and a county road past Mt Beulah Baptist Church to connect with Barnwell County surface treatment beyond White Pond.
Two Langley men Raymond Johnson and Claude Lott were jailed on a charge of entering and robbing Langley Drug Store last Thursday night. They were apprehended in Atlanta and returned to Aiken where they admitted stealing about $100 in merchandise.
Rev Neal Cannon a rising Texas Methodist minister will fill the pulpit Sunday morning at St John Methodist Church. He and his wife are staying with his parents Mr and Mrs J T Cannon at their Richland Avenue home.
Rural mail carriers from Aiken will start their routes at 9 30 a m instead of 10 a m beginning August 1. The change applies to the local rural delivery schedule and will affect morning mail runs.
Policy makers predict a long December start for Congress with the Agricultural Marketing Act as the main topic but little change expected. Democrats aim to attack the law while Hoover supporters push PR campaigns to sell its benefits via Farm Board efforts led by C. S. Brown of Arizona.
State highway officials announce U S Highway No 1 is paved along its entire length through Chesterfield County except for a two mile Cheraw stretch surface treated. The finish includes Patrick to Cheraw paved link and Cheraw to NC line opening, with completion planned August 20 and a Cheraw celebration. Detours noted on nearby routes.
Funeral services were held for John H. Davis son of Mr and Mrs James R Davis of Mt Calvary Church section who died Monday in an automobile accident at Musella Georgia. He rode with brother in law James Hudgens when the car hit a hole and overturned leaving Davis crushed beneath the door. He had lived in Aiken before moving to Musella and is survived by his wife Lucille, one child and a sister Mrs E M Derrick. His parents lost two other children years ago in separate accidents.
Ellenton Agricultural Club members heard winter legume guidance from Thomas W. Morgan Aiken County agricultural agent who urged planting hairy vetch and Austrian peas at twenty to thirty pounds per acre. Speakers included Harry G. Boyleston G H Ballentine Ernest L. Allen and T T Cushman. The meeting ended with a barbecue hosted by P H Buckingham.

About 125 boys and girls from across Aiken County attended the annual county 4-H camp at Edisto Academy Monday through Wednesday. Thos. W. Morean directed the program with Clemson and state extension staff assisting in swimming, games, demonstrations, and dining services.
For the first seven months of 1431, Aiken issued building permits totaling $214 521, with July alone reaching $46 950. The figure, while below historic highs, compares well given the present economy and supports Aiken's lead in Southeast building activity per population.
The sheriff reports 103 commitments to Aiken County jail in July, the highest since 1920. Ten were re commuted from June, with seven more avoided by a civil court guilty plea. Among new prisoners, three faced murder charges, six grand larceny, one rape, one forgery, and one arson. Prohibition cases were unusually few.

Ernest Thorpe meets Scout Paul Siple to hear of Anarctic adventures, Douglass Jeppe of Johannesburg as assistant resident engineer, Leslie A. Jones on income tax rounds, Burrell Bates back at the Farmers and Merchants Bank, and George W. Croft Jr home from medical studies celebrating a birthday with Henry Ford in Detroit.
The Mary Elizabeth Burnett Henderson memorial room at Baptist Hospital Columbia is being renovated with funds donated by late C. K. Henderson of Aiken. The room honors his wife and was originally pledged as a memorial.
W H Hite is ill at his home and friends regret to know of his condition.
South Carolina sold five million dollars of one year highway notes at a real 3.47 percent after a slight premium, with no extra bonds sold. Bids on five million in bonds were rejected at 4.5 percent, and the highway program continues with gaps to be linked in Edgefield Johnston Saluda and Trenton to Augusta via the Dixie Highway. Sheriff Spivey faces removal over bond issues as Governor Blackwood probes state officer removals and civil service reforms move forward with a budget and consolidation plan.
