Allied forces push through Tunisia and Libya to sever Axis links to Tripoli and Rommel, with air power pounding bases and ports while forces converge in a three pronged drive. The Atlas barrier and Mediterranean chokepoint at Tunis, Bizerte, and Tunisian coast shape the abortive Axis retreat as Rommel faced a difficult choice between El Agheila and a Tunisian linkup.

Soviets Stage Comeback Near Stalingrad In Winter Offensive

The Red Army counterattacked on two fronts near Stalingrad, punching holes in German flanks and advancing 40 to 50 miles in three days. They cut rail links east of the Don at Kalach and Abganerovo, threatening a trap as German losses mounted. A prior Russian victory near Grozny relieved pressure in the Caucasus, with about 5,000 Germans killed and many more wounded or fleeing. The front stretched from Volkhov to Tuapse as Soviet forces pressed the winter campaign to prevent German breathing space.
