Box of Vitrified Clay Reveals Coin Treasure
A box of vitrified clay found near Oscar Rhodes in Wayne county excites locals. An elderly inscriptioned chest contained 17 coins of varied shapes and sizes, resembling aluminum and floatable on water, with a serpent and rising sun motif. A tomahawk fragment and a large stone were unearthed nearby before planned dynamite blasting. Rhodes declined a big offer from Chicago collectors to preserve the relics for viewing at his home. Nearby, seven-year-old Dr. George Lehr was bruised but survived after an accident with a wagon on South Market Street.
