Rawhide Rail: Early Washington Line Built From Scraps

In 1868 Dr. D. B. Baker built a 32 mile interior Washington railroad from Walla Walla to Wallola to move wheat to the Columbia. Rails were wooden with strap Iron, sometimes loose and eaten by wolves, earning the nickname Rawhide Railroad. A seven and a half ton engine pulled flat cars and a collie guarded the cowcatcher. The line, called the Rawhide railroad, was sold to the Oregon Steam Navigation Co and used as a money maker.
