Neighborhood turns littered lot into a community playground
In the 9th District police and neighbors transformed a vacant lot across from headquarters into a public playground without government aid. Donations funded most features including a mural, playground equipment, and a brick patio with barbecue pit. Residents and officers, led by Lt. Gay Carraway and Patrolman Joseph Thomas, oversaw the project, named for Fannye Roberts who donated the lot. The effort drew national media attention and around 1000 in donations plus 150000 from an insurance firm, with arch student Dennis Bolazima providing free designs.
