In Paris, U S and French diplomats foresee a bargain to halt North Vietnam bombing in exchange for de escalation moves. Washington demands genuine DMZ demilitarization and a halt to all attacks as North Vietnam signals possible concessions.
The week end looks damp with a chance of rain tonight and tomorrow. Expect a high in the 70s tomorrow as residents brace for unsettled skies.
Six men were rescued from Gauley No 8 mine after 233 hours trapped by a flood. John Moore Jr and Larry Lynch voiced intent to return to mining, while four others died and will be mourned at area services. The mine near Hominy Falls is a low coal shaft opened in 1966, employing locals with about 27 dollars a day.
Washington debate centers on civilian proposal to eliminate the partially formed 6th Infantry Division. A murder charge against Luther Durham Jr. was nolle pressed in Dinwiddie County Circuit Court. Durham, 25, already serving life for a Frederick County murder, had faced two indictments for the 1963 killings of Mrs. Annie Shaw and Mrs. Waltrne Hoover. A new trial had been ordered in Dinwiddie earlier, tied to a second degree murder conviction from 1966.
Cleanup began as rescuers treated the injured and prepared to bury the dead after twisters struck Arkansas Iowa Illinois Indiana and Missouri. The death toll reached 71 with 43 in Arkansas 15 in Iowa 10 in Illinois 2 in Indiana and 1 in Missouri. Arkansas suffered 470 injuries and some remained critical while governors sought federal disaster aid and schools halted to aid storm families.

Pompidou appeals for order as police prepare for more protests and financial markets slide. The Communist led CGT plans to steer the movement.
