Six coal miners trapped for nearly ten days in a flooded WV mine were saved and deemed in good shape. They walked to a conveyor then the mine entrance, while four others in the same area were found dead. Autopsies planned and doctors warned of contaminant risks.
A set of lower dentures found in the County Office Building restroom traveled to Kingsport Tennessee after a Kingsport genealogist who visited the clerk’s office Monday mailed the alert from Woodstock. He missed his bus after rushing to leave.

In a correction notice the A&P Food Store states the boneless chuck roast price should read 69 cents per pound. The ad earlier listed an incorrect price.
Senate candidate Robert F. Kennedy denounces Hubert Humphrey as offering voters pabulum and tranquilizers after a Nebraska victory. Humphrey cites Gallup polling showing 40 percent vs 31 percent for Kennedy. McCarthy touts past New Deal scale while Nixon ally Rockefeller vies for delegates in Pennsylvania. Winchester police chief in hospital with hepatitis recovery reported.
The third annual Festival Air Show on June 1 at Bufflick Road airport celebrates Winchester Municipal Airport's 30th anniversary. The two hour program begins at 2 p m with aerobatic acts by pilots including Dean Ortner and Scottie McCray. Gates open at noon with free parking and armory bus service.

May 18 event sponsored by Christian Fellowship Class at Market Street Methodist Church will offer a rummage sale. Funds support church activities and community outreach at the local facility.
Gov. Mills E. Godwin Jr says he will devote his major campaign effort to the $81 million Virginia bond referendum this fall and avoid partisan stumping in congressional races. He backs Democrat McCutcheon as the district nominee and notes he will rally behind him only to that extent. He also reports security preparations in Norfolk and Richmond for visits by a Southern leg of the Poor People’s March to Washington.
A massive outbreak of tornadoes across nine states killed at least 172 people and injured hundreds. Jonesboro Arkansas suffered 33 deaths and 350 injuries as one tornado hit the city. Other hard hit areas include Oil Trough Mountain Home Tucker man Wapella Freeburg and Oelwein with multiple fatalities. National Guard and medical teams were dispatched to assist in Arkansas Iowa Illinois Missouri and Indiana.
