French sources report a nationwide student labor uprising causing factory occupations and shutdowns across the country. President de Gaulle cuts short his Rome visit and returns to Paris to manage the crisis amid escalating protests in the southwest region.

The Shenandoah Valley Gun Collectors Association semiannual show opens at the Winchester Armory and runs to tonight closing at 9. Tomorrow hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. More than 100 dealers expect 5000 to 8000 attendees over two days. Between 3000 and 5000 arms on display carry local and regional histories. Firearms range from Revolutionary and Civil War pieces to modern creations.

A Nimbus program observatory 1260 pounds with two nuclear generators was deliberately destroyed two minutes after liftoff when Thorad Agena D failed to reach orbit. The debris fell into the Pacific between Vandenberg AFB and San Miguel Island as Air Force and Navy search for possible recovery operations began.

Norther n Shenandoah Valley areas bore the worst, while Frederick and Clarke counties fared better.
Frosts in April and May winds have reduced the Washington state apple crop. Officials estimate around 21 000 carloads possible versus last year's 27 000, with a small 5 000 carload carryover. Harvest jobs may be scarce as early reports of a light crop spur recruiting.
