County Jail to Break Even After Hiring Ten New Deputies
Hays County Commissioners voted 5 to 0 to hire ten more employees for the Hays County Law Enforcement Center to meet Texas jail standards. Sheriff Paul Hastings said five hires start August 1 and five on September 1 to house more state and federal inmates. The jail is expected to generate about 3.8 million dollars in revenue in fiscal year 93 starting October 1992, with similar spending, and debt service remains minimal. Hastings notes the new payroll will be funded by the jail’s own revenue, reducing taxpayer burden from over 700 thousand annually.

Wimberley People, War, and the Rise of a Town
The excerpt recalls Wimberley from the 1930s to early 1940s, detailing Scudder family trade at Ranch House Cafe and local barter habits, the square as a social hub, and the town’s early schools. It notes the draft start in 1940, local volunteers before Pearl Harbor, wartime patriotism, and the shift to fuller employment with Gary Air Base, plus road improvements tied to the war effort.
