Bertha the hen hatches chicks by tree top ride
Hazel C. Green relays a story from Myrtle Cannon of Twin Mountain Manor Wim berley about a pet hen named Bertha. Bertha hatched six chicks after a coop incident and staged remarkable climbs to reach the nest on a 20 foot oak with the chicks riding on her back to higher limbs. The tale joins others about hitchhiking birds and ancient references to birds riding on larger ones.
