North Dakota produced 317 542 short tons of coal in 1905 valued at 25 778 dollars. Lignite underlies the western two thirds, used in state buildings since 1891. Output rose 17 percent from 1904 and 14.6 percent from 1903, with prices slipping from 1.50 to 1.34 per ton.
