Acting Dakota Governor George Hand's Cadre of Service
Territorial Secretary George H. Hand served as acting governor of Dakota for about six months after Governor Howard's death in 1880 until Nehemiah G. Ordway took office in July. A Akron native, Hand moved to Dakota after the Civil War, earning praise as a soldier and civic leader. He died at Pierre in March 1894 at age forty four.
