The Williston class honors its best program yet at the Star Theatre on Friday night June 3. The weather was fine and every student performed exceptionally well though the hall was small. Miss Lukens spoke clearly to the audience as the chorus sang.
The nine o clock start featured a decorated stage with class colors and roses. Graduates sat in a semicircle with the lone male in the center while Adele Mounger delivered a practical salutatory on education as forming a life, not just knowledge, and embracing a class motto. Frances Kellogg spoke on a dream of destiny for America, Vera Major recited Day Dreams, and Ernest Francis offered A Study in Agriculture outlining a school farming curriculum to prepare for a food producing state.
Lady delegates led by Miss Ponce and Mrs Perkins leave for St Louis to attend the American Woman's League first convention with free transportation and all expenses paid after securing ten full paid members. The Williston federation, about seventy members, aims for a chapter house costing at least $5,000, with plans to expand to enable a $2,500 house now and attract more members.
David F. Kine of Trenton area earned a gold medal at the National Corn Exhibition in Omaha Nebraska for Bluestem wheat judged the best milling wheat in the United States. The award highlights Williams County wheat quality as shown to Williston residents this week. A small house for rent is listed by E R Brownson.
Hon Geo W Wilson Republican governor candidate optimistic campaign progress and broad statewide appeal. Former Ward County Reporter editor with proven business and editorial acumen. He homesteaded Stanley townsite, owns Stanley telephone exchange, farms 500 acres, and plans a 50000 dollar brick business building. Former Williston land office register resigned recently with regional ties across Williams Ward Mountrain McKenzie counties and expects regional costs around 17000.
The Lawton Republican endorses Geo W. Wilson of Williston as a unifying, broad minded Republican candidate for governor. Wilson, former editor of the Minot Daily and Weekly Reporter, served as U S land office register at Williston and resigned to campaign. He is also Grand Master designant of the I O O F in North Dakota and owner of Stanley Sun and Stanley land interests. The piece asserts he would run a clean administration and unite factions.
After a May visit to the Ruble home eight miles north of Tioga, County Superintendent Mrs. Tatem and county commissioners committed the four oldest Ruble children to the feeble minded institute at Grafton under the compulsory school law. The family of seven had previously wandered in a snowbound prairie search, were found near White Earth and identified as Ruble by an address on recovered mail. Authorities say separating the parents may be needed as the mother shows signs of mental unsoundness.
Fred H. Smith and E B Link announce their candidacy for the Board of Education in the Graphic this week. Voters will decide at the election held Tuesday June 21. Both men have lived in the city for years and are well qualified for the office.
A pleased audience Monday night at Gates Opera House enjoyed the Civic League program followed by a dance. Prof Onstad led orchestral pieces from Maritana and Welesche Hungarian dances, with Liszt and other solos by Mrs. LeRoy Smith, Miss McNivin, Miss Wilkinson, Miss Morene Mead, and Father Arsenault. The event also featured a reading on Sakajewea and a later note on a three day I C O F Grand Lodge session in Minot with hundreds expected.
County Surveyor Frahm of Ward county drafts plats for Lostwood and Lands Valley in Mountrain county. The towns lie in rich farming country beside a growing district near the Great Northern extension from Stanley. Lostwood sits 18 miles from Stanley, Lands Valley six miles from Lostwood and 24 miles from Stanley. Realty company has not announced opening sale dates.
An excellent corps of instructors has been secured for the Teachers Institute to be held for one week at the High School assembly room starting Monday June 20. County superintendent Mrs. Tatem says invitations went to 170 teachers, with over 100 expected to attend. the lineup includes C C Schmidt State University Mrs J Sanderson Grand Forks Miss Fisher Valley City Normal Miss Mary Pett Minot and State Superintendent W L Stockwell. The county school officers’ meeting will be held Saturday the 25th and teachers will remain to attend.
