Patterson Case Ends in Acquittal in North Dakota

In Bismarck, North Dakota, E G Patterson was acquitted as the grand jury failed to indict on four cases including three liquor offenses and a bawdy house charge after a ten day session. Judge Winchester discharged the grand jury at 10:30 this morning. The public and observers noted the pronounced relief in the courtroom.

Prizes for Photographs Show North Dakota Development

The Department of Agriculture and Labor offers a monthly prize of 85 for the best photograph showing North Dakota development. Photos must depict farming, stocking, manufacturing, or building and be suitable for half tone reproduction. Each entry includes a brief subject description. The department will also acquire and pay for all suitable photographs for use in department literature.

Williston Baseball Team Earns Two Wins and One Loss

Williston played three games last week. Wheelock won 15 to 0, Leeds won 10 to 2, and Ross-Stanley led Williston 10 to 6 after nine innings in a standout Sunday contest. Pitchers were hampered by injuries and delays but Slettie of Culbertson arrived late to help.

Attempted suicide by 22 rifle cited in Schafer incident

Dr Morris of Schafer arrived in the city with J. H. Hirley who on Sunday tried to kill himself with a 22 rifle. He fired four shots with near misses and a skull wound that was not fatal. He was taken to Frances Hospital under doctors Dochterman and Jenessen. Hirley, about 50, stated he could hit a gopher’s head better than his own.

Children’s Day Services Observed With Recitations and Music

A church program for Children’s Day featured doxology and the Lord’s Prayer led by the congregation, responsive psalms, school singing, and prayers. Williston Post Office Raised to Second Class

Postmaster G. B. Metzger notified that the Williston post office is raised to second class with salary increased from 1700 to 2000 dollars, effective July first. The office has four clerks and a 360 dollar clerk hire limit while postal receipts exceed 9000 dollars for the year, a gain of over 90 percent from last year. Railroad notes outline staffing and schedule shift

L. J. Heiner named chief clerk at the passenger depot. Gen. Passenger Agent Allen Jackson and ER. D. Henry with G. N. civil engineers were in the city Friday. Starting next Sunday trains No 5 and No 6 will run to Culbertson and turn, instead of stopping here.

Western Union Office to Open After Ordinance Passes

Joseph W. Jackson secretary of the Commercial club reported that the ordinance granting an uptown Western Union office had passed. The manager had wired that they were ready to open and a new office likely to be opened in the coming days.

Railroads Seek Stop To Minnesota 2 Cent Rate

In St Paul on May 31 stockholders of the Great Northern Northern Pacific Chicago and Milwaukee Northwestern Omaha Minneapolis and St. Louis Soo and Chicago Great Western railroads filed for a temporary injunction in federal court. Judge Lochren signed the order to restrain railroad officers and Minnesota’s attorney general from enforcing the two cent passenger rate and upcoming freight rate.
