Great Northern Detective McKay and Agent Merritt arrested two men LeRoy and Ray Larsh after guarding a box car during rain. They found stolen goods on the pair and in the car. Both men waived examination and were bound for district court.
A morning blaze in Willow City, Bottineau County, engulfed the Lazier butcher shop and spread along Main Street. Fire crews from Willow City and Bottineau battled the flames amid a southeast wind, with losses nearing 115000 and insurance under half the amount.
The Department of the Interior has issued a new Notice for Publication form while old blanks remain in use. Land offices waste labor copying old notices as the department rejects them. The Graphic has the new form and will fill all orders.
Heavy rains flooded city basements across homes and businesses. The Bruegger Mercantile store suffered major damage as water traveled from ditches and water mains into its basement, disrupting nearby properties and routines.
Night watchman reports water breach at two in the morning Sunday flooding a store several inches deep with mud. Clerks moved merchandise through Sunday afternoon. West and Rawson's hardware also flooded but limited damage. Some residences affected as ditches filled last fall and dry ground settled creating openings for water.
Ray defeated Williston 3 to 2 in a tight ball game on Monday afternoon. Ray took the lead with two runs in the second inning and held the shutout until the eighth when Williston scored once on Dutch Palmer’s run. Merrill pitched well for Ray.
The funeral of little Clifford Maderson was held in the Congregational church conducted by Rev Henness. Music by a mixed quartette with Miss Maggie Monroe at the organ. Four of Clifford's schoolmates acted as pallbearers. Remains were taken to Williston cemetery for a grave side service before burial. Clifford leaves his parents two brothers and three sisters.
Contractor D A Dinnie began excavation for the Heffernan block on Saturday. He built a rear bridge to dump dirt into a wagon, saving labor. The two story brick block will be 32 feet wide and 100 feet long, delivering a top city building.
On Monday evening June 17 a reception will be held at the Court House for teachers from McKenzie and Williams Counties. After an informal gathering a short musical program will be rendered. Citizens are urged to attend and give the teachers a hearty welcome.
Judge Goss will convene a term of the district court next Monday morning in the city. Several important cases are set for trial, including the criminal cases against the two box car robbers.
A joint teachers institute between McKenzie and Williams counties starts Monday in this city. About 335 teachers are expected, with 115 from Williams, 120 from McKenzie, and 20 from the other county. Prof. C Ellithorpe conducts with assistants Mrs Rosengquist and P J Iverson. Miss Bertha Palmer from Dickinson schools assists primary teaching. Prof. J G Halland of the N D A C will lecture midweek. Mrs Tatem coordinates arrangements and a reception is planned for Tuesday evening before the fireman dance.
The Williston Fire Department plans a Tuesday night dance at the New Roller Rink built by Mr Gates. A six piece orchestra led by Prof Onstad will provide music on a large 44 by 118 foot maple floor. Proceeds fund needed fire company supplies.
The Williston Encampment I O O F elected officers at their last Friday meeting. C P Edwin A Palmer served as Chief Patriarch with Fred Wegley H E Field Scribe and other line officers including S Penson John A Corbett J L Pettis and W Wilson named for varied posts.
County commissioners planned a regular session beginning July first with the first week set aside as an equalization period. The standard routine agenda will start in the second week of the meeting.
Williston gears up for a busy week featuring the Teachers Institute, District court and Farmers Institute. The city is expected to crowd as residents prepare to welcome visitors into their homes and places.
Paul Field who handles the mail on rural free delivery route one was furnished with a fine new U S Mail wagon this week by the postal service.
