Great Drain Upon Forests
Since 1880 the lumber supply has shifted dramatically with Michigan and eight other states comprising over half the output. By 1906 the same nine states produced 51.5 percent as Michigan, Louisiana and Washington altered shares. Forest drain outpaced population growth, signaling rising scarcity and higher prices. Total wood use reaches about 50 billion board feet annually for lumber and related products, with fuel alone estimated near 6 billion.
