The briquettes, devised by Dr. B J Schimper, were produced from lignite dust via a secret chemical process and compressed into hard bricks. Tests showed heat units rivaling anthracite with significantly less ash and smoke, maintaining 150 pounds steam and driving the engine about twenty miles using 11 800 pounds of briquettes.
