Williams County Commissioners Conduct January 1903 Sessions

Williams County North Dakota officials convened in January 1903 with Chairman Parshall presiding. The minutes cover highway openings, a bridge project on Stony Creek, tax abatements, wolf bounties, fire wardens, road work, and public road openings including damage settlements, with multiple roll calls and adjournments through January 17 1903.

Congress expected to pass coal duty repeal bill quickly

Washington reports Congress will move to remove the 67 cent per ton coal duty with a ninety day rebate and reciprocity. Canada would gain free Nova Scotia coal while western coal and the Alleghenies would be duty free in Canada. Ways and Means plans to report the bill today and both houses aim for swift passage with limited tariff opening debate.

Icebound for hours on Detroit river ferry ride

Passengers on the Wabash east bound Continental Limited faced a fifteen hour icebound ordeal on the transfer steamer Great Western. Backed onto the ferry at midnight Sunday, most slept as ice fields blocked progress until the afternoon. Lunch was sent aboard for women and children before the train resumed at 3 40 PM.

Refuting Testimony in Anthracite Strike Hearings

Proceedings before the anthracite coal strike commission on January 14 featured the Delaware and Hudson company calling witnesses to describe conditions at its collieries and to rebut testimony against the firm while miners aides listened. Brigadier General Wilson again acted as chairman in Chairman Gray’s absence as the Delaware and Hudson hopes to wrap up its case, with the Erie company set to present its testimony next.
