Wellman’s Air Ship Explodes Near Pole Again
Walter Wellman and three companions failed in their second attempt to sail the North Pole aboard the America after a guide rope break 32 miles from Spitzbergen led to a high altitude drift and a final explosion. The party was rescued by the Fram, and Wellman vowed to try again with improvements.
