Edmunds the Second Territorial Governor of Dakota
Newton Edmunds, appointed by President Lincoln to succeed Jayne, arrived in Yankton in 1861 and led Dakota through the Indian outbreak. He favored counsel over powder, earned Lincoln’s agreement, and helped end the war. He vetoed a divorces bill, promoted agriculture, introduced the first Dakota sheep, and died February 12, 1904 at Yankton aged eighty eight.
