Slide for Life on Awning Averts Death in Fire

In New York a grocery store awning served as a toboggan slide allowing about three dozen tenants on the lower floors of a nine story building to escape a fire on First Avenue. Smoke blocked stairs and ladders, while others reached safety via roofs and various fire escapes. Firefighters contained the blaze quickly. four bandits were slain and two captured in Sonora’s Mier district during separate action.

Flames Take Lives in Cleveland House Fire

Fire from a lamp yesterday destroyed the home of James Lee on Bancroft Avenue. James Lee perished from smoke inhalation. Henry Katen, a boarder, was fatally burned. William Lee, six, is missing and believed harmed.

Station Agent 18 Murdered In Devil's Lake

Great Northern railroad station in Devil's Lake North Dakota reports station agent O J Hooper and former cashier E Bryant found unconscious with gun nearby. Hooper died en route to hospital and Bryant died later after being shot by Bryant according to theory, Bryant had been discharged from his cashier position.

Prison for convicted brokers in Brooklyn case

Col Edward Britton and Edward H Schroeder former officers of Eagle Savings and Loan Company were sentenced in Brooklyn Supreme Court to indeterminate terms in Sing Sing for larceny of 4000 dollars. Britton faces 14 months to four years six months while Schroeder's term mirrors but with a one year minimum. Federal cereal figures out.

Wheat on Hand March 1 Estim 143,692,000 Bushels

The department of agriculture reports farmers held 143,692,000 bushels of wheat on March 1, about 21.6 percent of last year’s crop. Corn on hand March 1 is 1,047,763,000 bushels, 39.3 percent, with wheat figures for 1907 and a ten year average shown for comparison.

Arthur Ovens, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Ovens, vanished May 11 with only the clothes on his back. He reappeared at 11 PM Sunday bearing two four year old steers totaling over 3,000 pounds, likened to a fatted calf in the town tale.

Boy trader proves self by driving cattle and trading to earn fare

A youth leaves home to show he can trade his way to independence. He finds work with Fred Foster of Warner New Hampshire, driving cattle and trading his wages into goods. He starts with a yearling heifer, trades for a carriage, and sells it for about four times the heifer’s cost, then continues trading as he travels about 26 miles daily for nearly a week to gather funds.

Two children were struck and killed on a trestle near Catoosa Oklahoma by a passing train after a snow storm. A heavy snowstorm affected the Rocky Mountain region, disrupting travel in Denver and surrounding areas.

Mrs Coggeshall, widow of a Springfield man who escorted Lincoln to Washington, recalls an 1861 Baltimore assassination attempt. Her husband allegedly shoved Lincoln to safety and hurled a bomb from the coach window. Coggeshall later served as Lincoln’s minister to Ecuador, dying of yellow fever.
